The future of transportation took centre stage in Chania as the international SPHERE Conference “Mechanics of Transportation: Green, Safe and Smart” was successfully held on 7–8 September 2026 at the Technical University of Crete, within the Erasmus+ project “Sustainable Transportation within the Framework of Green Deal”.
Researchers, representatives of SPHERE partner universities and local stakeholders gathered to exchange ideas and research on sustainable urban mobility, safer transport systems, intelligent technologies, vehicle electrification, simulation and environmental performance. The programme also highlighted the vital role of universities in preparing a new generation of engineers for the green and digital transition.
The opening was marked by welcoming remarks from Vice Rector Professor Danae Venieri, Deputy Mayor Nikolaos Chazirakis, Dean Professor Michalis Doumpos and SPHERE Scientific Coordinator Professor Georgios Stavroulakis. The scientific programme connected academic innovation with practical challenges facing cities, transport operators and society.
An important lasting result is the SPHERE Conference Proceedings, published as an e-book by the Technical University of Crete Press. More than a meeting, the conference demonstrated the value of international collaboration in turning research into knowledge for greener, safer and smarter mobility.
